First Word

"Designers have a dual duty; contractually to their clients and morally to the later users and recipients of their work," it has been wisely said.

All design has its source in some form of inspiration: this month we bring you a restaurant – Fabbrica, whose raw design is inspired by the current global economic scenario. Designed by Netherlands-based design firm Tjep, its Bissaza-clad open oven and train compartment seating is attracting design lovers like a magnet!

We constantly strive to bring to you not just inspired projects but projects that inspire. A fitting example is the penthouse designed by Pune-based designer Sanjay Newaskarr. By using the same palette of colours and materials throughout the house, Newaskarr has lent a syncronised, rejuvenating ambience which has a plush, spa-like appeal. With its international appeal, the home redefines contemporary minimalism. A similar minimalist approach is seen in the office of CA firm MZSK and Associates designed by Mumbai-based designer Sushant Deshmukh. Through smart planning and use of upmarket materials Deshmukh has created a sleek, sophisticated space, as directed by the client.

Another inspired design, arrived at by delving into the human psyche, is that of Rehab, Mumbai's newest party hub. Minal Chopra, a Mumbai based designer and stylist has boldly represented latent thoughts in the design – some directly through word play, and some indirectly through the bold use of colours and textures.

This issue we also delve into retail design, with a project in Bengaluru – a multi brand store, Maison designed by London-based firm Sybarite and Bengaluru based RC Architecture that uses the hourglass shape as the leitmotif throughout the store. We also speak to Martand Khosla of Romi Khosla Design Studio who has designed stores for fashion designers like Suneet Verma and Shantanu and Nikhil. He shares his insights on store design, and expounds on retail design for high-end fashion stores.

Our specials include a feature on glass and its burgeoning demand, a product feature on regal chaises, and a collection of artwork for family rooms.
